On the Campaign Trail with Ed Tibbetts

Convention leftovers

Monday, March 10th, 2008 8:18 am

Some folks at the Scott County GOP convention were a little surprised at the turnout Saturday. A little more than 200 delegates showed up, but there were 370 elected at the precinct caucuses.

A lot of the folks I talked to Saturday were optimistic about their chances in the fall elections, but the turnout was perplexing.

Also, a couple of Statehouse candidates made it known Saturday that they’re running.

Joe Sturgis, who runs the Rusty Nail in west Davenport, says he’s going to run against Iowa Rep. Cindy Winckler, D-Davenport. Sturgis says the proposed smoking ban is motivating him.

Linda Greenlee, the longtime party activist who was the administrative assistant to Pat Gibbs when he was mayor, is going to run against Rep. Jim Lykam, D-Davenport.

Greenlee told the convention Saturday she decided to run after a search for a candidate turned up empty.

Republicans made a hard run at Lykam last cycle and were unsuccessful.

One topic that is ofcourse ommitted from your blog is the fact that Ron Paul was heavily represented at the GOP Convention, getting people to start asking the question… “Didn’t Ron Paul drop out of the race?” My question is, how many times can the Main stream media, who are controlled by only 5 major corporations nationwide, report that Ron Paul has dropped out? They have reported his drop out 3 different times already. Can’t you only drop out once? And why, in a recent interview with CNN, did Ron Paul explicitly state he was still in the race? How is it that he has so many people behind him, regardless of what the media says? How many more times is the media going to report that Ron Paul has once again dropped out of the race? What are these 5 corporations afraid of with a Ron Paul Presidency and a victory for limited government and free markets? Well I’ll tell you… no government protection against entreprenuerial competition! When your on the top, the only guarentee you have to remain the king of the hill is to lie, steal and cheat any way you can… and so far I have to say they have been doing a great job! Maybe it’s time Americans start asking more questions and stop believing everything they see on TV as gospel.

I agree Mr. Elliot. You said everything I am feeling. We have been ripped off by mainstream media. I will never trust them again. I have learned one very important lesson out of this 08 race. That is that whoever mainstream media props up is not who I want for my President. Clearly they try to sway public opinion. By that standard does not a Constitutional Presidential candidate, with the number of people behind him have a right to get the same media attention as the rest? Apparently in America the media thinks it knows best. I don’t even watch tv anymore-the propaganda is overflowing within the media,I for one am not buying into it. Poor man want to be rich, Rich man want to be King ,and the King is not satisfied till it owns everything. I for one do not want the media or the powers that be -owning me.Time to start thinking for ourselves America. I will be writing Ron Paul in this November. I know a lot of people who are. One last stand in defiance of a system of corruption.

  3. Tammy Erickson Says:

In the last two weeks, he must have had more tv coverage than during the last three months when media exposure could have earned him votes.Fox news and Neil Cavoto had Ron Paul on tv yesterday to talk about the Fed dumping more money into the financial crisis we are in. Basically this move by the fed will hurt the already weak dollar and in the end it will have done more harm then good.Ron Paul also said HE IS STILL IN THE RACE.

Surprised - as in that’s more or less than expected? I know my caucus leaders did such a wonderful job of requesting this from the obviously larger than expected crowd - “You get to sit all day and you have to pay $10 to go - so do we have any volunteers?” Gee, such optimism, the crowd rushed to be a part of this wonderful adventure…

Should they have been surprised at the Ron Paul turnout? Was it greater than 50%? No other non-local candidate is mentioned…

BTW way I did not see that Fox interview with RP in it until today when I went to this website-http://thelastmovement.blogspot.com/2008/03/dr-paul-on-cavuto.html

    Mr. Allen,

This blog is an extention of Ed Tibetts article in the Sunday paper section A6 regarding the Convention. In that article, he atleast mentioned Ron Paul once. The speech on behalf of Ron Paul got people thinking and asking questions. What started out as a Cold, don’t ask questions, don’t rock the boat McCain Convention started to slowly change into a question authority, step out of line, stand up and speak for individual liberty Ron Paul convention. There was talk to bring back the grand old party that cherished limited government and personal freedoms, but in both this blog or the paper’s article, there is no mention of how this mood evolved during the convention, let alone that it even existed. The article in Sunday’s paper makes you believe that everyone there was behind McCain and somehow we nominated him at this convention(A flat lie) It’s just another example of what someone wants you to believe and this mentality will ensure another loss for the Republican Party in November and a further crumble of the number of Republicans participating in the process. It’s time the leadership in our party start realizing that the fresh blood of the Ron Paul Revolution is the exact solution needed to revitalize the party, restore the original platform that restricts government and protects personal freedoms and get valid true conservative candidates to run against the ever growing number of collectivists who will sacrifice the few for the greater good of the many. My point is, if anyone thinks this is a slam dunk for McCain, then they are truely under estimating a liberty movement that will not stop any time soon. State Senate candidate Shawn Hammerlink said it best when he said, “When a population gets pushed too far, it bites back.” I’m willing to bite if needed, and I’m not the only one. Remember the nomination for the Republican ticket is during the National Convention… anything can happen before that time.

As for local candidates, two candidates recognize the new liberty movement and we’ll see if they can lead the way for liberty or if they just fall in line for party unity’s sake.

Oh and here is the CNN video I was referring to earlier for reference.

  8. Christopher X Says:

In response to Michael D. Elliot’s comments about how the media reports news.

Is it any suprise that Ron Paul is so unfairly reported on in newspapers and other mainstream media? They have shown for a while now that they think that they can control what people think about things by what and how they report. I thought it was the press’es responsibility to report the news, meaning ALL of the news. In a manner that is correct and unbiased. But alas, we continue to see that news reporting companies and groups are now no more than PROPAGANDIST machines for whomever owns them, and for the political “elite”. This has happened before in history. Hitler did it as well as all communist contries. I wonder if the press as ever fully realized that by doing these things they too will soon lose their inalienable right to print or report what they wish, as granted by the 1st Amendment in the Constitution, and ultimately by God. Whether it is Global Climate change, gun control, the soveriegnty of our country, our right to privacy from our government, our right to be free of illeagal search and seizures by so called authorities( from building inspectors to the IRS or emminant domain)yet they refuse to secure the boarder, or how they report about Ron Paul, the media needs to return to just reporting the news in it’s raw form. It’s time for the twisting of the facts to end and for honor, truth, and integrity to be renewed in the press.

  9. steven montross Says:

If there is one thing I can thank Ron Paul for,it’s the impetus to educate myself on economics and monetary policy.Dig into that can of worms and you’ll develope a taste for precious metals. Also the privacy and freedom message is long overdue. As for Republican complaints about national security, I think a crashing dollar would hurt our lifestyles more than a crashing airliner.

  10. Thomas Says:

Well their Sunday edition did briefly mention one RP nut (Page
A6). He “got up and questioned McCain’s conservative
credentials” and said “Ron Paul gives us an option”. Afore
mentioned RP nut did get lots of applause which the paper
failed to mention, and had lots of compliments and “I didn’t
realize that about McCain” during the recess.

Has anyone seen the “Secret History of John McCain” in the New
Republic? It was pretty scary, they point out how adept he is
at changing positions while getting everyone to believe he has
never changed. They even show real examples. That came out in
the convention and in the QC Times write up of him. The
paragraph before the RP nut said, “People respect McCain, they
Trust him, he’s Honest.” It’s amazing how many people fall for
a professional liar, but then who hasn’t been sucked in by a
    well polished used car salesman.

  11. Dale Allen Says:

Is 200 or 370 more or less than expected?

How did the vote turn out? Did the “stand up and speak for individual liberty Ron Paul convention” have an effect or did everyone enjoy the presentation and still vote McCain?

“somehow we nominated [McCain] at this convention” - did we?

  12. Michael D Elliott Says:

No one is nominated for the party run until all the states are finished with their delegate selection and election process. For Iowa, that is not until middle of June! Second, I’d like to add that the most common thing I hear when Ron Paul is mentioned is that he is a Libertarian and that somehow I am a Libertarian. I am against abortions which is not Libertarian. And I also believe that Government is a necissary evil, and without it, we would have anarchy which provides no protections for the individual’s rights and offers no value to contracts between individuals, since there would be no one of force to ensure that they are honored. I don’t believe Libertarians believe in what I or Ron Paul believe. Yes in his 20 years as a congressman he ran on the Libertarian ticket for one year, but if that one year makes him more of a Libertarian than a Republican, then we need to really start calling John McCain a Democrat and not a Republican. It’s time Republicans get the courage to standup and say we’re the base that believes in limited government, low taxes and strong National Defense!! No Nation Building, No National ID Card, No North American Union, No Amero, NO, No, NO. We used to be a party of leaders! Where did all the cowboys go? The pioneers? The “give me Liberty or give me death” folks? I know it’s tough to be the guy on the end of the rope, but if we can’t have the courage to stand for principles, regardless of Majority consensus, then why even hold elections anymore? Why do we need to have two Democratic Parties, when we can just merge them together as one. Isn’t that their ultimate goal anyways, one world, one nation, one people with an “Army of One”?

I’m for individuality, diversity, independent thinking, pioneers, rough riders, dare devils, heros, risk takers, our forefathers… It may not have all the exact same garbage cans perfectly lined up along the street on garbage day and perfect green lawns as far as the eye can see, but it’s the only way to ensure that everyone remains free and recieves equal treatment under the law no matter what status or position in life. How many times in history has a one world government emerged on the horizon and after it’s collapse we see how inhumane it really was. Are we that stupid of a living organism that we are doomed to repeat history over and over again until we finally wipe ourselves out of existence?

The question should have been…”To be free, or not be? Cause that is the real question.”

    For Liberty,
    Michael D Elliott

  13. Dale Allen Says:

So… I agree with the majority of your stuff, more than you know…

From what I’ve read you can be against abortion and still be Libertarian… Libertarians also believe in government… I don’t like labels, it puts to many labels into the listeners head before they are allowed to hear the message.

So what happened if no one was elected? What was the point of this convention - ie, were RP or MC supporters picked to move on?

WAS THE TURN OUT HIGH? I can’t tell from the authors comments.
