GOP leaders to pick a challenger for Hare

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008 8:45 am

(9:45 a.m.) Illinois’ 17th District Republicans aren’t giving up on challenging first-term U.S. Rep. Phil Hare, D-Ill.

Here’s my story in today’s Times.

The upshot: Republicans have a handful of people interested and a special convention of county party chairs will meet Saturday in Macomb to fill the slot.

This is an uphill battle. Hare is a freshman, true. But he’s also got a good lead in the money race and the district leans Democratic, especially since new boundaries were drawn seven years ago. But, of course, we have elections to decide these things and, as we’ve seen in this year’s presidential race, conventional wisdom isn’t always that, well…..wise.
